Carbon footprint
Measuring our carbon footprint
Believe it or not, we know what our carbon footprint is and what's more, we're taking steps to reduce it.
A team from Brighton University working for the DTI Technology Programme worked with Manhattan to understand where we could make a difference with our materials, manufacturing, assembly and transport methods.
The 'cradle to grave' assessment resulted in an average Manhattan kitchen having a carbon footprint of 204kg - representing 1.7% of the average UK citizen's burden.
So what's the point you may ask? Well, with the help of the experts, we are now taking steps to actively reduce our footprint by setting up a heat recovery system that takes non recyclable wood waste and uses it for fuel. If 50% of our waste wood is used for heating, we can cancel out the impact on the environment of our packaging and transport.
We're also looking at redesigning our kitchen units so that we can transport them in flatpack form and reduce haulage.
