There are 8.6 million people in the UK who are registered with special needs. Demographic studies show that the percentage of elderly people is also rising dramatically. This sector of the population has widely differing physical abilities and many live with able-bodied families and carers.
The Manhattan enable range is the result of an intensive research and development programme by a project team that includes a wheelchair user. The team concluded that to provide optimum accessibility a kitchen should:
- offer a wide range of choice, accommodating the design philosophy used in standard kitchens;
- give a high degree of flexibility, catering for the physical needs of different users;
- have excellent functionality without sacrificing style;
- meet the specified standards for special needs users.
The enable range meets all of the above criteria and more. Some of the features of the range are:
- flexible-height cupboards, worktops and internal shelves; the multi-hole bracket design allows for adjustment to suit users of different abilities;
- storage systems with added functionality - cupboard/drawer lighting for the visually impaired;
- transparent doors help users locate items;
- contrasting worktop edges for the visually impaired;
- cupboard and drawer systems that improve access and storage space;
- soft touch closing mechanisms on drawers and cupboards with easy grip handles;
- side opening appliances with fully extendible shelves;
- adjustable height worktops, which can be fitted with powered height adjustment ;
- easy to empty, pull-out, waste bins.
This range is fully compliant with BS6222 and meets the FIRA GOLD AWARD standard.
